Austria-Hungary, Empire. A Private Wartime Photo Album, Battles of Isonzo, from a Field Artillery Regiment

A fascinating private wartime photo album, constructed of a card stock binding, the cover bearing handwritten dates “1915-1916”, the interior content consisting of 12 card stock pages pasted with 49 photos, of various sizes and accompanied by detailed handwritten captions, opening with an introduction indicating that the images depict the service of Batterie 8/3 under Hauptmann A. Heinz and documents the unit’s service from September 1915 until February 1916, featuring a view of the view of the Sabotin mountain ridge, followed by depictions of Austro-Hungarian artillery guns and uniformed personnel in mountainous terrain, with depictions of battle-scarred churches and towns, transitioning to images of Austro-Hungarian fortifications near Sabotin, as well as personnel near Salcano (now Nova Gorica, Slovenia) and Gorizia (Görz, now in Italy adjacent to the Slovenian border), including a notable image of unexploded Italian ordnance which was used in an accompanying Polish-language newspaper article, with additional scenes of Austro-Hungarian Škoda 305 mm Model 1911 guns in action, concluding with scenic photos of Monte San Gabriele (now Škabrijel, near Nova Gorica, Slovenia), measuring 25 cm (w) x 17.5 cm (h), demonstrating minor fatigue, a superb primary account of an Austro-Hungarian artillery unit in action against Italian forces in the vicinity of the pivotal Battles of Isonzo (with the depicted city of Gorizia captured by Italy in August 1916 during the Sixth Battle of Caporetto, being being recaptured by the Central Powers during the devastating Battle of Caporetto in the fall of 1917), in extremely fine condition.
