Description

A period frame black and white photo postcard of S.M.S. Erzherzog Karl, with a delicate section of ribbon tally, contained within wooden frame and behind glass, photo measures 14 cm (w) x 9 cm (h), near very fine.

Footnote: SMS Erzherzog Karl was the lead ship of her class of Austro-Hungarian pre-dreadnought battleships, launched in 1903 and commissioned in 1906. Though compact due to budget limitations, she served as the fleet flagship during peacetime and boasted a top speed of 20.5 knots with a main armament of four 24 cm guns. During World War I, she served in the III Battleship Division and spent most of the conflict blockaded at Pula, though she notably participated in the bombardment of Ancona in 1915 and helped suppress the Cattaro mutiny in 1918. Following the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the battleship was awarded to France as a war prize but ran aground at Bizerte, Tunisia, in 1921, where she was ultimately scrapped.
