An Iron Cross 1st Class certificate to Lieutenant Kretschmer of 1st Group of Fighter Wing 54. Dated to March 31, 1942 and signed in blue ink by the Chief of the 1st Air Fleet and Commander-in-chief East, Colonel General Alfred Keller (1882–1974), recipient of the Pour le Mérite and the Knight’s Cross.
An Iron Cross 2nd Class certificate (139x199mm, extremely fine) to Lieutenant Kretschmer (misspelled Kretschmar) of the 1st Squadron of Complementary Fighter Group 54. Dated to September 25, 1941 and signed in blue ink by Colonel General Alfred Keller.
A Front Flying Clasp for Fighter Pilots in Gold certificate (148x209mm, extremely fine) to Lieutenant Kretschmer of 5th Squadron of Fighter Wing 54. Dated to May 1,1942 and signed in black ink by Major and Wing Commodore Hannes Trautloft (1912–1995), recipient of the Knight’s Cross.
A Front Flying Clasp for Fighter Pilots in Silver certificate (148x210mm, near extremely fine) to Lieutenant Kretschmer of Complementary Squadron of 1st Group of Fighter Wing 54. Dated to February 22, 1942 and signed in black ink by Deputy Wing Commodore, Captain Dietrich Hrabak (1914–1995), recipient of the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves who flew over 1,000 combat missions and is credited with 125 aerial victories.
A Front Flying Clasp for Fighter Pilots in Bronze certificate (149x209mm, near mint) to Lieutenant Kretschmer of Complementary unit of Fighter Wing 54. Dated to September 18, 1941 and signed in black ink by Major Hannes Trautloft.
A Wound Badge in Silver certificate (148x210mm, near extremely fine) to Senior Lieutenant Kretschmer of 4th Squadron of Fighter Wing 1 for being wounded once on March 6, 1944. Dated to May 9, 1944 and signed in blue ink by Major and Group Commander Heinrich Bär (1913–1957), recipient of the Knight’s Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords, who flew over 1,000 missions, was shot down 18 times, and is credited with 220 aerial victories.
Two large promotion documents (255x355mm, near extremely fine and extremely fine), one from Lieutenant to Senior Lieutenant, dated to June 22, 1943; and one from Oberfähnrich (Senior Ensign) to Lieutenant, dated to April 20, 1941. Both carry a facsimile of Hermann Göring.
A Pilot’s Badge certificate (210x296mm, very fine) to Cadet NCO Kretschmer. Dated to Berlin on September 17, 1940 and signed in blue ink by Major General Karl Barlen (1890–1956).
An Eastern Front Medal certificate (140x199mm, near mint) to Lieutenant Kretschmer of 2nd Group of Fighter Wing 54. Dated to August 6, 1942 and signed by Captain and Group Leader Heinrich Jung (1912–1943), KIA and posthumous Knight’s Cross.
A front mission log book (166x212mm, near extremely fine), September 1942 to April 1943, missions 273 to 400. It is signed by Kretschmer’s squadron leader, the name is indecipherable. The front cover shows the Cyrillic words for “notebook”.
A kill list (210x295mm, near extremely fine), documenting nineteen kills between June 27, 1941 and March 19, 1943.
A Luftwaffe ID card (105x149mm, near extremely fine) made from cloth, dated to May 22, 1941. Issued by a Fliegerhorstkommandantur (Air Base Command) and signed by a Major and Fliegerhorstkommandant, the name could be Mehlig or similar. Renewed quarterly until the first quarter of 1945.
An accompanying letter (209x297mm, near mint) to the certificate of appointment which officially declares somebody to be employed by the government. Dated to November 20, 1942 and sent to Kretschmer’s father, Oskar Kretschmer.
A deposit certificate (210x297mm, very fine), stating that Kretschmer left a will with the Supreme Command of the Wehrmacht. Dated to Saalfeld/Saale on August 30, 1944.
A letter with two salary statements (3 pages, 211x148mm, very fine). Dated to December 19, 1944. The salary statements are for January/February and November/December 1944.
A bilingual (English/German) certificate of discharge from the Luftwaffe (212x273mm, fine). Dated to December 18, 1945.
Two cloth insignia: one is a variant of the insignia of Fighter Wing 54 “Grünherz” (green heart) (78x93mm, extremely fine), possibly the insignia of his squadron; the other one is of a post-war veteran’s association (95x85mm, near mint), the Gemeinschaft der Flieger deutscher Streitkräfte e.V. (Association of German Armed Forces Airmen).
18 wartime photos (between 46x68mm and 85x117mm, all extremely fine or better), all showing Kretschmer, either alone or with other soldiers. Several pictures also show Captain Dietrich Hrabak.
Two business cards: one wartime (118x60mm, near mint), stating “Wolfgang Kretschmer, Senior Lieutenant of a Fighter Wing”; one post-war (89x51mm, near mint).
Footnote: Wolfgang Kretschmer was born on April 15, 1922 in Haan near Düsseldorf. He first joined the Jagdgeschwader (Fighter Wing) 54 in 1941 as a Lieutenant and took part in the attack on Russia. On June 25, 1943 he was awarded the Honour Goblet of the Luftwaffe, just days after his promotion to Senior Lieutenant. From then on, Kretschmer was appointed Squadron Captain and Squadron Leader of several squadrons in Jagdgeschwader 54 and later Jagdgeschwader 1. During the course of the war, he had already crash-landed his plane a few times and remained unscathed. However, on March 6, 1944 he was shot down over the city of Quakenbrück (Lower Saxony) and had to bail out. He survived with severe burns and after a few months was back to leading his squadron. Kretschmer is credited with 11 aerial victories. He died on August 7, 1999.
