United States; Silver Star (two-piece construction, silver star placed upon a bronze gilt star-shaped base, engraved "LOUIS R. FOCACCI" on the reverse, 34.5 mm x 35.5 mm, original ribbon with brooch pinback); and Purple Heart (two-piece construction, bronze gilt with purple, red, white and green enamels, engraved "LOUIS R. FOCACCI" on the reverse, 35.2 mm x 43.5 mm, original ribbon with brooch pinback). Intact enamels, extremely fine. Both awards are accompanied by their 10 mm x 35.5 mm ribbon bars with slotted reverses and their 4 mm x 17 mm enamelled ribbon bars, the former with a button hole attachment, the latter with a screwback.
Footnote: Louis R. Focacci was born in 1909. He had two years of high school education and was semi-skilled in construction occupations, when he enlisted for Second World War service, as a Private with the United States Army, on April 2, 1942 at Fort Jay, Governors Island, New York, enlisting "for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the President or otherwise according to law". He served with the 6th Armoured Division of the United States Army and was awarded the Silver Star, "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with the 6th Armored Division during World War II", by Headquarters, 6th Armored Division, General Orders No. 21 (1945). He was also awarded the Purple Heart.
