Albania, Kingdom. An Order Of The Black Eagle, Commander, C.1914

Established 1914. A finely enameled red eight-pointed silver-gilt star with typical Albanian ball finials, surmounted by princely crown suspension also in silver gilt, the obverse is featuring a central enameled black double headed eagle, surrounded by inscription BESE E BASHKIM (Loyalty and Union), the reverse centre is embossing monogram of William, surrounded by an enameled red border inscribed institution date (March 26th 1914), measuring 51.80 mm (w) x 68.92 mm (h - inclusive of crown with star suspension), presenting toned silver, on original worn neck ribbon, an attractive and desirable piece in very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order was founded by Prince Wilhelm Weid of Albania. This Order was the highest title conferrable upon citizens of the Principality of Albania, and it was awarded to recognize civil and military merit. The Order was discontinued on September 5, 1914, less than 5 months after it was founded, making it one of the rarest European Orders.
