Description
A book, 148 p., measuring 277x233mm, better than very fine condition with damage to the spine and some discolouration. It is a copy of “Entscheidende Stunden” (Decisive Hours), published in 1941, German propaganda about the war effort from the standpoint of a journalist turned soldier. Includes 27 pages with a short introduction in the form of an experience report, and 91 black and white photos as well as 24 early colour photos. They depict many different military branches on deployment in Poland, Norway, France, and Belgium.
Additionally, the book carries a dedication: “To John - a great friend. 3/29/83.” Signed by Clint Hackney Jr.
A page has been added at the very beginning. It is a certificate, stating that on the Day of the Wehrmacht in 1943 the O. B. (Offizierbewerber = Officer Candidates?) of the Secondary School Böblingen won 1st prize in a group shooting competition. It is signed in blue ink by Senior Lieutenant and Junior Officer Kauz.
Footnote: The author, Eric Borchert (ca. 1900–1942), was a photographer in a “Propagandakompanie”. Before the war, he had worked for the “Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung” newspaper, where he was already known to be at the top of his field. During his time in the propaganda company, he was described as one of the ablest photographers. After seeing action in Poland, France, and Norway, Borchert went to Africa in 1941 to report on Rommel’s Afrikakorps. He was killed in action in early 1942 in Tobruk, eastern Libya.
