A First War Signed Studio Portrait of Bavarian Major General & Royal Court Master Max Freiherr von Redwitz; Card-mounted, measuring 107x165mm, very fine condition with some scuffing of the edges and minor discolouration. The card shows Max Freiherr von Redwitz in uniform. He signed the card in black ink “Zur freundlichen Erinnerung - Max Fhrr. von Redwitz - Glmjr.” (In friendly memory - Max Freiherr von Redwitz - Generalmajor). The photographer is B. Dittmar, Royal and Ducal Bavarian Photographer in Munich.
Footnote: Max Freiherr von Redwitz, full name Maximilian Heinrich Joseph Freiherr von Redwitz auf Schmölz und Theisenort, was born on August 14, 1858 in Munich. His family is of Franconian nobility and exists to this day. Redwitz joined the Imperial Bavarian army and became a cavalry officer. In 1889 he was appointed Hofmeister (court master) of Castle Biederstein by Max Emanuel in Bayern of the lineage of the dukes of Bavaria. After his death in 1893, Redwitz became the personal adjutant of his brother, Duke Carl Theodor, a position he held for the next 10 years. Redwitz went on to take leadership of the Military Riding School in Munich. His final appointment was that of the Haushofmeister of Prince Ludwig Ferdinand of Bavaria. The highest military rank he held was that of Major General. He died on March 25, 1920.
