Description
Description
This is a textbook example of an extremely well preserved second pattern Luftwaffe dagger by an uncommon maker. Measuring 420 mm with the scabbard on, this dagger features a well preserved 265 mm long nickel-plated magnetic steel blade. The blade’s reverse ricasso is maker marked “Robt Klaas, Solingen”, with the blade featuring a double-edged flattened diamond-shaped design, with minimal scratches common to extraction and return to the scabbard with a sharp tip, natural shine, and scattered surface wear. The thin black leather blade washer remains fully intact and attached to the dagger beneath the crossguard. The bright aluminum hilt fittings are nicely detailed, including the embellished pommel, the eagle on the cross guard, and quillon surfaces, with very light contact. The swastikas on both sides of the pommel have lost all of their gilt through time and wear. The medium pumpkin-coloured celluloid grip features ten rows of very tightly wound aluminum bullion wire, free of interruption. The silvered metal (magnetic) scabbard measures 291 mm, with a traditional pebbled finish, a lightly worn ball final, with the throat being retained by two mounted screws, and two aluminum dagger hanger fittings with loops and an oak leaf design. Accompanied by a dagger portepee fabricated from fine aluminum bullion wire; the head in multiple rows of innate twisted wire; the center of the head in loops of matching embroidery; the stem in a thatched design; with long fine aluminum wire cord tightly wound around the scabbard and pommel of the dagger. Overall, this dagger is in extremely fine condition, serving as a textbook example of a Second Pattern Luftwaffe dagger.
