Description
A photo, measuring 101x143mm, extremely fine condition. The insignia he is wearing have been denazified. On the reverse, the photo is dedicated to Dieter Doden (?), the collector. Mitzlaff states that the picture was taken in 1944 in Merseburg, and that there was no ceremony, since they were on the run.
Footnote: Berndt von Mitzlaff (1914–2003) was born in Schkopau (Saxony). He won a German Cross in Gold on October 25, 1943 as part of the Panzer Reconnaissance Detachment 8 in the 8th Panzer Division. Mitzlaff received the Knight’s Cross on December 20, 1943 in the same unit, this time as their Commander. The highest rank he achieved during the Second War was that of Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel). After the war, Mitzlaff joined the Bundeswehr in late 1955 and served as the military attaché to the Western German embassy in Oslo. He was retired in 1972 in the rank of Oberst (Colonel). He died in Koblenz in 2003.
