Accompanied by First War Sapper Robert Donald Sadler's Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen World War Service Medal (bronze gilt, obverse illustrating Victory with her left hand resting upon the shoulder of a man in loincloth in front of her, an olive branch in her raised right hand, the soldier leaning on a sword in his right hand and a hat under his right foot, inscribed "FOR SERVICE IN THE WORLD WAR FOR LIBERTY AND FOR FREEDOM OF NATIONS", reverse inscribed "PRESENTED BY THE BROTHERHOOD OF RAILROAD TRAINMEN TO ITS MEMBERS WHO GAVE THEIR SERVICE TO THEIR COUNTRY FOR THE SAKE OF DEMOCRACY AND UP-LIFTING HUMANITY" and maker marked "W. & H. CO. NEWARK, N.J." (Whitehead & Hoag), 34 mm, suspended from a bronze gilt hanger with pinback, hanger engraved in running script "R.D. Footnote: Robert Donald Sadler was born on November 16, 1891 in Thornham, England. He was resident of Hamilton, Ontario when he signed his Particulars of Recruit Drafted Under Military Service Act 1917 Paper (Military Service Act Letter and Number 503155) as a Private (3106444), with the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd Central Ontario Regiment, at No. 2 Military District, in Hamilton, on January 5, 1918, at the age of 26, naming his next-of-kin as his father, Robert Vincent Sadler of Titchwell, King's Lynn, Norfolk, England, stating that he had no previous military service, that he was Single, that his religion was Church of England and that his trade was that of Railway Yardman. In his Canadian Pay Book, he named his next-of-kin as his mother, Emma Sadler of Titchwell. Sadler later went overseas to England, where he joined the 13th Battalion, Canadian Railway Troops. The 13th Battalion, CRT was formed in the Spring of 1918 from the personnel at the depot at Purfleet, England. He embarked for overseas service in France, as a Sapper with the 13th Battalion, CRT, on March 28, 1918. After the war, Sapper Robert Donald Sadler returned to Canada and was discharged upon demobilization on September 15, 1919, entitled to wear the War Service Badge, Class "A", number 191350. For his First World war service, he was awarded the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. His son, Sergeant V.W. Sadler, served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War and for his service, he was awarded the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and the War Medal 1939-1945.
