Netherlands, Kingdom. An Order Of The Union, Grand Cross, C.1865

(Orde van de Unie, Groots Kruis). Issued 1806-1811. Manufactured c.1865 by Bacqueville, Paris, as a display award, consisting of a bullion star with rays consisting of alternating rays of carefully attached sequins that are bordered by twisted silver bullion wire, and broad flattened aluminum bullion strands, also bordered by twisted silver bullion wire to give definition. The center of the star consists of a silver center plaque depicting a crowned lion in wavy seas, surrounded by a broad ring of light blue enamels, inscribed “DOE WEL EN ZIE NIET OM” (Latin - Do justice and don’t sway from it); the reverse consists of the complex off-white threading that build up the star, with several prongs that attach the plaque to the star; with slight remance of glue; with attractive dark patina from age, in overall extremely fine condition.

This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society.
