Footnote: Stephen Higgins enlisted as a Private, attesting for the Honourable East India Company's service at Dublin, Ireland on June 5, 1845 at the age of 20 and placed with the 1st Bombay Fusiliers (1147). He remained in good standing until January 29, 1846, when he was tried and imprisoned for three months, from January 30th until March 27th. He was released March 28th and resumed his rank of Private but ran afoul of the authorities twenty-two months later, once again tried and imprisoned for an additional three weeks, from January 26 to February 17, 1848. He resumed service as a Private the next day, and for the next sixty-two months, remained in good standing until April 8, 1853, when he was again tried and imprisoned for another three months, from April 9th to July 17th. He was released on July 18th, only to be tried and imprisoned a fourth time, on October 1, 1854, for an additional six weeks, being released November 14th. Higgins elected to remain in the Service in accordance with G.G.O. No. 883 of 1859 on July 20, 1859. He re-enlisted for an additional five years' service on January 17, 1861, volunteering for General Service on May 9th and elected for the Indian Pension Rules on July 27th. Higgins was promoted to Corporal on July 15, 1862. His conduct improved from his previous behavioural patterns, as he was granted a Good Conduct Badge on November 16, 1863. He returned to his old ways, as he was tried by Court Martial and once again confined in mid-May 1865 for a short period. He concluded his India service at Mhow on September 25, 1865. Higgins returned to Britain and was discharged from active service on May 1, 1866, credited with having served 21 years and 311 days. His medal roll confirms that he was entitled to the Punjab Medal with both the Goojerat and Mooltan clasps.
