Description
(SS Soldbuch und Verleihungsurkunde). A Soldbuch named to Johann Kaschuba, constructed of an olive-drab card stock binding, the interior with 32 off-white paper pages with handwritten entries, measuring 105 mm (w) x 148 mm (h), with age-appropriate material fatigue evident, in overall better than very fine condition; an award document for a Wound Badge, Black Grade, named to “SS-JÄGER JOHANN KASCHUBA”, 15. Kompanie, SS-Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 14 ("Prinz Eugen" ), issued on 25 April 1944 for a single wound suffered on 29 February 1944, with the handwritten signature of a SS-Sturmbannführer temporarily in command of the regiment, measuring 140 mm (w) x 202 mm (h), with a central folding crease evident, in overall near extremely fine condition, and; a black-and-white photograph depicting Waffen-SS personnel in the field, the reverse bearing a handwritten inscription of “KASCHUBA”, undated, measuring 88 mm (w) x 64 mm (h), in near extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Johann Kaschuba was born on 15 October 1918 in Franzfeld, Banat (now Kačarevo, Serbia), to ethnic German parents Johann and Johanna (nee Haas). He served with the Pionier-Kompanie of SS-Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 2, remaining with the unit when it was redesignated as SS-Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment 14. These units were engaged in anti-Partisan warfare in the Balkans during Kaschuba’s service time. He was issued with the Karabiner 98k rifle. Kaschuba was awarded the Wound Badge, Black Grade, on 25 April 1944, and the War Merit Cross, II Class, on 30 January 1945. Kaschuba was hospitalized near the end of the war with explosive shrapnel wounds, and died in a military hospital in Villach on 19 May 1945.
