An Fantastic Honour Chronicle for the “Großdeutschland” Regiment; Gefreiter Karl Heinz Wedekind

Originally gifted from the parents of Gefreiter Karl Heinz Wedekind, this choncile with extensive amount of wartime photos Measures 234x302mm, better than very fine condition with light scuffing of the leather cover, and the string binding having come mostly loose. The photos are in overall near extremely fine condition, with some having been bleached by sunlight. The album contains 25 pages honouring the German soldiers and their efforts in the war, consisting of prints of photos depicting high NSDAP officials, including A.H., as well as propaganda shots of soldiers in the field. This part is followed by 16 pages meant to be used as a war diary (Kriegstagebuch), which have not been filled out. The next 28 pages contains 102 photos of Wedekind and his comrades. The final 20 pages are intended as a family tree, these are unused as well. The album is dated to Harburg (a borough of Hamburg) on March 31, 1943. The dedication reads: “In loyalty and acknowledgements the homeland greets its brave sons who fought and won for Greater Germany’s freedom. In memory of this fight and victory from your parents.” The next page names the owner of the album, Gefreiter (Lance Corporal) Karl Heinz Wedekind, Inf. Reg. “Groß-Deutschland”. He is seen on the very first picture, a large studio portrait, wearing his uniform with the “Großdeutschland” shoulder straps, as well as an Iron Cross 2nd Class ribbon. The earliest photos show him during his time in the Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD = National Labour Service), the later ones during what is presumably his basic military training. The album comes with a small envelope containing several more pictures of Wedekind and other soldiers, specifically some of him and other wounded men recovering in a military hospital. It also contains several newspaper cutouts of soldiers’ obituaries, presumably friends of Wedekind, as most of them lived in Harburg. There is also an article about the Panzer Battle of Borisovka, part of the Battle for Kharkov. Handwriting on the article reads: Please store this for me. Presumably Wedekind fought and was wounded in that battle.
