Canada, Commonwealth. A Lot of Watercolour Drawings Related to the Saskatoon Light Infantry in Italy during WW2.

A collection of well-preserved watercolour drawings, painted by a Canadian soldier who fought in Italy during World War 2. The drawings were completed during and after the Battle of Ortona, which ended on 28 December 1943. Included in this group are two portraits of Major General Vokes, who led the 1st Canadian Infantry Division, and Major General B.M. Hoffmeister, who led the 5th Canadian (Armoured) Division. The rest of the collection features various landscape scenes from Ortona in December and January of 1944. Accompanied by three bills from Greece, France, and Italy (500 drachmas, 5 francs, 5 lire). Housed in a binder. All in extremely fine condition. 

Footnote: The Battle of Ortona was fought between two battalions of elite German Fallschirmjäger from the German 1st Parachute Division under Generalleutnant Richard Heidrich, and assaulting Canadian troops from the 1st Canadian Infantry Division under Major General Christopher Vokes. The fighting lasted eight days, from 20 December 1943 to 28 December 1943. The Germans retreated on the 28th.
