Canada, Cef. A War Medal With Army Class "C" War Service Badge, To Nursing Sister Mary Motion

British War Medal (N. SISTER. M. MOTION.). Naming is officially impressed, in silver, measuring 36 mm in diameter, with an Army Class "C" War Service Badge affixed to the medal's original ribbon, the badge in silvered white metal, with a red enameled insert in the crown, numbered "93827" and maker marked "CARON BROS. MONTREAL 1919" on the reverse, measuring 26.5 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). Near extremely fine. Accompanied by a brief biography of Nursing Sister Mary Motion.

1. Nursing Sister Mary Motion was born on June 21, 1883 in Kippen, Sterlingshire, Scotland. She enrolled in the Nanaimo Training School for Nurses in 1915 and went overseas with the first group of female nurses ever to go to war during the First World War. Motion died on November 7, 1963 in Toronto, Ontario, at the age of 80.

2. The Army Class "C" War Service Badge was awarded to those not included in Class A or B who were discharged for reasons other than misconduct, with those who served in Canada only being entitled. Additionally: (i) Members of the CEF not eligible for Class A or B who served with pay for an aggregate period not less than three months, and had been retired or honourably discharged, including those who suffered a disability due to military service and had been discharged solely due to the disability before they served three months, (ii) Members of the Active Militia of Canada who, had they remained on duty until the completion of the arrangements authorized by P.C. 1569 (National Archives of Canada, RG 2, Vol. 1200, File 22 June 1918, P.C. 1569.), would have become members of the CEF, provided they served with pay for an aggregate period not less than three months and had been retired or honourably discharged, including those who suffered a disability due to military service, and been discharged solely due to the disability before they served three months and (iii) Members of the Imperial Forces not eligible for Class A or B, who resided in Canada on the 4th of August 1914, and who returned to reside in Canada, subject to the same conditions as in (ii).
