In silver, reverse engraved 490286 L-Cpl. A. AUTON and marked STERLING on the 6 o’clock arm, measures 31.8 mm (w) x 35.2 mm (h), worn on original purple ribbon, light wear, very fine. Contained in original case of issue exterior in black leatherette marked with crown, velvet medalbed, measures 70 mm (w) x 90 mm (h) x 25 mm (d), light wear, does not close fully, near very fine.
Footnote: Arthur Auton was born in Twickham, London in 1883. He emigrated to West Vancouver, B.C, and was employed as a labourer when he enlisted on March 27, 1916.
Auton served with the 1st Canadian Pioneers following his debarkation in Shorncliffe in May 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal in the field in May 1917. He suffered a gunshot wound to the right thigh in September of the same year. Auton was reported killed in action while serving with the 9th Canadian Railway Troops on October 23, 1017. The circumstances of his death state “this non-commissioned officer was instantly killed by enemy shell fire while at work on October 23 at about 9 a.m”, in the vicinity of Zillebeke.
