A Memorial Cross, in silver, reverse machine engraved 2022292 Pte. W. HERON, 6 o’clock arm marked STERLING, full size, dark patina and unique gradation on the reverse, very fine. Contained in original black leatherette case with crown on the lid, interior in white silk and velvet, measures 60 mm (w) x 85 mm (l) x 25 mm (d), functional clasp, light wear to edges and staining in interior, remains very fine.
The case is accompanied by its original packaging - a cardboard box addressed to Mrs. Annie Heron, Scaraboro Junction, Ontario, with three three cent stamps, and army ink stamp, measures 70 mm (w) x 100 mm (l) x 48 mm (d), light wear and staining, a rare component to be included with the decoration, in very fine condition.
Footnote: William Heron was a single farmer in Scarboro, Ontario, when he was drafted for the war on January 23, 1917. He served with the Canadian Machine Gun Corps, and was killed in action on September 29, 1918. On this date, the CMGC was in action at the Canal du Nord–Bourlon Wood sector, advancing toward Cambrai, playing a crucial supporting role in one of Canada’s most significant First World War victories.
