Instituted in 1900. In silver, medallion attached to a bar suspension set on a functional swivel hinge; the obverse bears the crowned effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, surrounded by the words VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX, the reverse bears the image of Britannia holding the Union Flag in her left hand and a laurel wreath in her right hand, behind her troops march inland, regimentally impressed 30248 CORPL: S. GRIFFITHS, 33RD Coy IMP: YEO; original striped ribbon includes five clasps for ‘South Africa 1902’, ‘South Africa 1901’, ‘Transvaal’, ‘Orange Free State’, and ‘Cape Colony’, black stitching on ribbon, 36.25 mm, extremely fine condition.
Footnote: The Queen’s South Africa Medal was instituted in 1900 and awarded to British and Colonial military personnel, and to civilians employed in an official capacity, who served in the Second Boer War in South Africa. Altogether twenty-six clasps were awarded alongside this medal. This medal was designed by G.W. de Saulles.
