Description
Description
Instituted on December 15, 1854. A silver medal, obverse featuring the left facing effigy of Queen Victoria surrounded by the inscription VICTORIA REGINA, reverse presents the winged figure of victory placing a wreath crown on a soldier’s head, with the inscription CRIMEA vertically on the left side of the medal, suspended by a scroll suspension, rim has been regimentally impressed 108 WILLIAM. DICKENS. 5 BATTN. L.T.CORPS., full size, accompanied by ribbon with SEBASTOPOL clasp, cleaned and displaying multiple scratches throughout, notable edge bruises, rim has been shaved at the edges, better than fine.
Footnote: William Dickens is present on the medal roll for Crimea.
The Land Transport Corps, later reformed into the Military Train, played a crucial logistical role during the Crimean War (1854–1856), a conflict in which inadequate supply systems became infamous. Tasked with transporting ammunition, rations, and equipment across the harsh terrain of the Crimea, its men operated wagons, pack animals, and draught horses to sustain British forces engaged in battles such as Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, and during the protracted siege of Sebastopol. Although they rarely fought in the front lines, their work was vital to maintaining the army in the field under brutal winter conditions and amidst cholera outbreaks. Service in this unit earned soldiers the Crimea Medal, usually without battle clasps, marking their indispensable but often overlooked contribution to one of the most challenging military campaigns of the Victorian era.
