(Orden del Mérito Agrícola). Instituted in 1905. Five-piece construction, base star in in silver gilt featuring clusters of green enameled arms, with central insignia in silver gilt with 18K Gold surmounting crown featuring five genuine diamonds and five synthetic gemstones, the white enamelled inscription ring (also in 18K Gold) with red and white enamelled shield below, ornate vertical pinback flanked by dual stays, measuring 78.1 mm (w) x 79 mm (h), weighs 97.97 grams, chipping evident in the green enamels, small cracks in the white enamel, small areas of gilt loss on the central medallion, near extremely fine.
The Miniature, in entirely 18K Gold and enamels, with diamonds set in the inscription ring, boutonniere reverse, measures 24.3 mm (w) x 24.3 mm (h), weighs 8.55 grams, enamels intact, extremely fine.
Both pieces contained in the original case of issue, a burgundy leatherette exterior with interior silk lid marked J. Sar, MADRID, velvet medal bed, measures 115 mm (w) x 115 mm (h) x 35 mm (d), functional hinge and push release clasp, light wear, extremely fine.
Footnote: The Order of Agricultural Merit was instituted on December 1, 1905 by King Alfonso XIII and awarded in recognition of those individuals who had encouraged the agricultural practices within Spain. The Order originally had three grades: Grand Cross, Silver Cross and Cross. In 1906, The Grand Cross, Commander by Number (also known as Grand Officer), Commander and Knight were added to the Order.
