Portugal, Kingdom. An Order of Christ, Grand Cross Set by Costa

 (Ordem de Cristo). Instituted 1319. Type II (1918- Issue). A Grand Cross in silver gilt and enamels, reverse mirrors the obverse, measures 43 mm (w) x 66 mm (h), suspended from a loop with floral designs, worn on a full length silk sash, enamels intact, in extremely fine condition. The Star of the Order, in silver gilt, an 11 point star with clusters of three smooth rays, the central medallion featuring a red and white enamel cross on a white enamel field, encircled by a raised gilt wreath, the reverse features a vertical pin, a cartouche of FREDERICO COSTA, measures 72.2 mm (w) x 72.3 mm (h), unmarked, enamels intact, in extremely fine condition. 

Contained in original case of issue, a red papered case, the interior marked FREDERICO COASTA LISBOA as the manufacturer, a red velvet medal bed, measures 140 mm (w) x 280 mm (h) x 50 mm (d), staining on the exterior and interior, hinge and catch functional, notable wear, in near very fine condition.
