Description
Description
(Preußen 1. Weltkrieg Ersatzpickelhaube aus Filz für Mannschaften Infanterie). A very well-preserved Prussian Infantry “Ersatz” Pickelhaube (spiked helmet), constructed of field-grey pressed felt. The crown is topped by a circular gilded brass disc, fixed in place with four domed rivets, accommodating a protruding spike of identical construction, which features five ventilation holes distributed around the stem. Affixed to the peak is a gilded brass insignia consisting of a Prussian imperial eagle clutching an orb and sceptre, overlaid by a monogram and banner bearing an inscription of “MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND” (“WITH GOD FOR KING AND FATHERLAND”), and measuring 12 cm (w) x 9 cm (h). The helmet is flanked on each side by a brass stud which accommodates a chinstrap which is adjusted with dual brass buckles. Situated beneath the studs are magnetic metal cockades, with the right side painted in a red, white, and black Imperial tricolour, and the left side in a Prussian black and white motif. An integral protruding visor and neck guard complete the exterior features, while the rim features a rolled edge throughout. The interior is encompassed by a brown leather liner which culminates in ten fingers, each perforated at the top with an eyelet for the accommodation of a drawstring which has been lost to time. A magnetic metal ring fastened to the top of the crown maintains the structural integrity of the spike. Stamped onto the liner is a size mark of “54”. Otherwise unmarked, the helmet measures approximately 16 cm (w) x 26 cm (l) x 11 cm (h). Minor issues consistent with age are evident, and include some fatigue to the liner (with partially detachment of stitching above the forehead) and surface oxidation to the interior crown disc. This scarce wartime economy helmet remains in a near extremely fine condition.
