Germany, HJ. A Commemorative Dress Bayonet, by Klittermann & Moog

(HJ Bajonett). An unusual and well-preserved HJ commemorative dress bayonet, measuring 35 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 20.5 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to both the top and lower edge. A wide fuller runs the majority of the length of the top edge of each side of the blade. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “KLITTERMANN & MOOG G.M.B.H., HAAN B./SOLINGEN”, circumscribing the firm’s logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated non-magnetic metal alloy hilt with a hooked quillon and pommel, and with an insertion slot set into the latter retaining a functional push-button spring release. An intact blackened leather buffer pad covers the seam where the blade meets the hilt. Two pieces of pebbled black bakelite compose the handle grip, and are fastened in place with dual domed magnetic metal rivets. Inset into the obverse of the handle is an enameled HJ insignia measuring 15 mm (w) x 25 mm (h). Accompanying the bayonet is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the inclusion of a frog, while a spring catch within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, sporadic loss of nickel plating to the hilt, and some scratching of the scabbard paint. This scarce example of a military-size HJ commemorative bayonet remains in a near extremely fine condition.
