Germany, DRK. A Medal of the German Red Cross

(Medaille des Deutschen Roten Kreuzes). Instituted 6 April 1937 by Duke Carl Eduard of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. (1937-1939 issue). Constructed of silvered bronze with multi-coloured enamels, the obverse consisting of a Geneva Cross with red enameled arms, joined through the outer quadrants by a white enameled ring, bearing a central gilt and black enameled German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the reverse of the crossed featuring a pebbled finish and bearing a raised inscription of “FÜR VERDIENSTE UM DAS DEUTSCHE ROTE KREUZ” (“FOR SERVICE TO THE GERMAN RED CROSS”), measuring 39.10 mm in diameter, weighing 18.1 grams, demonstrating some flecking of the enamels in addition to extending loss of finish to the base metal resulting in minor oxidation, in very fine condition.
