Description

(Nishan-i-Osmania). Instituted in 1861. Type II with Green Enamels. In silver gilt with red and green enamels, unmarked, designed with seven star points with three protruding rays between each star point, obverse centrepiece illustrating a upward-facing crescent moon with gilt Arabic script above, reverse centrepiece illustrating a trophy-of-arms with the year in Eastern Arabic numerals "٦٩٩" = AH 699 (1299/1300 AD, the year of the creation of the Ottoman Empire), measuring 62.5 mm (w) x 81 mm (h) inclusive of its star and crescent moon suspension, intact enamels, on its original full-length neck ribbon, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Order of Osmanieh was instituted on December 9, 1861 by Sultan 'Abdu'l-Aziz Khan I and awarded to Ottoman civil servants and military leaders for outstanding services to the state. It was originally awarded in three grades, which was extended to five grades in 1867.
