Spain, Kingdom. A Royal and Military Order of St. Hermenegildo, Grand Cross Star, c.1880

(Real y Militar Orden de San Hermenegildo). Instituted November 28 1814. A large star, in silver gilt, featuring a four point Maltese cross with ball finals, each arm features a trophy of arms symbol with a helmet in the middle, between each arm is a cluster of seven silver faceted rays, the obverse medallion presents St. Hermenegildo on horseback on a white enamel field with green foreground, encircled by a blue ring inscribed PREMIO A LA CONSTANCIA MILITAR with an exterior green wreath surround, the reverse of the star bears a thin vertical pin flanked by dual stays, there is also a thin plate of 18K gold, measures 89.9 mm (w) x 90.7 mm (h), weighs 69.14 grams, missing the surmounting crown on the 12 o’clock arm (holes for adhesion present), small areas of enamel damage on the wreath and blue inscription, remains in near very fine condition.
