Description
Description
(Waffen-SS Uniform für Unteroffizier der 3. SS-Panzerdivision "Totenkopf"). A rare and and well-preserved 3rd SS Panzer Division Totenkopf Reconnaissance NCO’s uniform, consisting of:
1. An M40 service tunic, constructed of field-grey wool. The tunic features a turned-down collar which transitions into double breast lapels, and which is flanked on each side by tabs constructed of black wool with buckram cores. Each measuring 40 mm (w) x 55 mm (l), the right side insignia tab bears a machine-embroidered silver-grey Totenkopf, while the left side rank tab features two silver aluminum wire tresses, each bisected by black threaded bands, topped by two silvered pips, indicating a rank of Sturmscharführer. The shoulders are topped by straps constructed of black wool with field-grey wool underlays, trimmed with copper-brown piping, bordered by silver-grey embroidered tresses, and pinned with two silvered rank pips, indicating a rank of Hauptscharführer. Each measuring 45 mm (w) x 110 mm (l), the straps are secured in place with integral loops set into the tunic’s outer edges, and with pebbled zink buttons on the inner edges. The cuff of each sleeve is rolled up and secured in place with machine stitching around the entire circumference. Stitched onto the upper left arm is an insignia consisting of a black rayon backer bearing a machine-embroidered, silver-grey, SS-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. Executed in classic BeVo fashion, the eagle measures 90 mm (w) x 40 mm (h) overall. Four pleated pockets are set into the breasts, all closing with scalloped horizontal flaps perforated with reinforced buttonholes meeting pebbled zink buttons. Three sets of dual loops stitched into the upper left pocket accommodate awards with vertical pinbacks, while an additional row of loops arranged horizontally over the same pocket allow for the addition of a ribbon bar. The tunic closes with four pebbled zink buttons on the right flap meeting an equal number of reinforced buttonholes on the left. Stitched through the top buttonhole is a ribbon for the War Merit Cross II Class. Completing the exterior features are two pebbled zink belt hooks which emanate from the back waist. The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece slate-grey rayon/cotton-blended liner which transitions into an unusual pattern rayon through the arms. A single interior pocket is set into the upper left breast. Unmarked, the tunic measures approximately 41 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 62 cm, and an overall body length of 77 cm. Issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include minor soiling and material fatigue throughout the base material, the replacement of the shoulder straps with rank mis-matched examples, the elimination of the top buttonhole by stitching and removal of the corresponding button, and evidence of repairs and modifications to the interior liner (including possible replacement of the sleeve liners). A scarce example, this tunic remains in a better than very fine condition.
2. A pair of trousers, constructed of an identical field-grey wool. Seven magnetic metal buttons are distributed around the waistband, in addition to a single bakelite button, while the trousers also feature a French fly closing with three magnetic metal buttons meeting an equal number of hidden buttonholes. Two side vertical pockets are set into the front of the thighs, while a single back pocket at the upper right leg closes with a horizontal slit. Two elasticized loops emanate from each ankle, in addition to dual drawstrings, to securely accommodate the owner’s footwear. A light blue cotton/rayon-blended liner surrounds the interior of the waistband. Unmarked, the trousers measure approximately 42 cm across the waist, with an inseam of 33 cm, and an overall length of 104 cm when folded on a flat surface. Demonstrating only minor soiling and material fatigue consistent with age and wear, they remain in an overall better than very fine condition.
