Germany, Kriegsmarine. Three Service Badges

(Abzeichen). A pair of Kriegsmarine service badges, including:

1. A U-Boat War Badge, constructed of gilded zink, the obverse consisting of an oval laurel leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Kriegsmarine eagle clutching a mobile swastika, surrounding a central U-Boat situated over a hollow void, the reverse with a barrel hinge and tapering vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch emanating from a circular plate, unmarked but demonstrating the characteristics of a variant produced by an unknown manufacturer as examined in “The Kriegsmarine Badges: Volume 1”, Sascha Weber and Gerhard R. Skora, pages 152-153, measuring 48.90 mm (w) x 39.82 mm (h), weighing 21.6 grams, demonstrating near-total loss of gilt finish throughout the base metal, in very fine condition.

2. A Coastal Artillery War Badge, constructed of gilded and silvered zink, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Heer-style German national eagle clutching a mobile swastika, surrounding a central coastal artillery gun with its barrel raised and extending beyond the edge of the wreath, the reverse with a barrel hinge and banjo-style pinback meeting a flat wire catch, designer marked “OTTO PLACZEK, BERLIN” and maker marked “C.E. JUNCKER, BERLIN”, measuring 41.83 mm (w) x 53.87 mm (h), weighing 23.0 grams, demonstrating near-total loss of finish throughout the base metal, in addition to crude replacement of the catch, in fair condition.

3. Germany, Kriegsmarine. A Minesweeper War Badge, Variation 1, AS-Marked, (Kriegsabzeichen für Minensuch-, U-Boot-Jagd- und Sicherungsverbände). Constructed of gilded and silvered zink, the obverse consisting of an oval oak leaf wreath, joined together at the bottom by ribbon, topped by a Kriegsmarine eagle clutching a mobile swastika, surrounding a stylized depiction of an exploding sea mine, the reverse with a ball hinge and vertical pinback meeting a flat wire catch, maker marked with the “AS” formerly attributed to Adolf Scholze, Grünwald an der Neisse, measuring 45.04 mm (w) x 56.09 mm (h), weighing 26.3 grams, demonstrating near-total loss of finish to the base metal, a Variation 1 badge in very fine condition.
