(Albrecht-Orden, Ritterkreuz 1. Klasse). Instituted 1850 by King Friedrich August II of Saxony. Type II. (1876-1918 Issue). A fine silver gilt award featuring a white enamelled Latin Cross, with green laurels detailed with red enamelled berries, with silver gilt swords in each quadrant, obverse presenting with a central medallion composed of a gilt relief of Duke Albrecht III of Saxony inside a blue enamelled ring bearing the Order’s motto of ALBERTUS ANIMOSUS (ALBERT THE MERCIFUL), reverse with a central medallion composed of a crowned royal coat of arms in silver gilt and enamels, surrounded by a blue enamelled ring bearing the Order’s institution date of 1850, marked on three o’clock arm SCHARFFENBERG, marked on six o’clock arm S, marked on nine o’clock arm DRESDEN, measuring 37.45 mm (w) x 50.50 mm (w), with light enamel wear and minor loss to blue enamel on obverse, on loop for suspension from its period original triangular ribbon, and in overall very fine condition.
Footnote: 3253 awarded in Gold and 4815 awarded in gilded silver.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
