Ordre du Mérite Indochinois, 1er classe; Six-pointed silver-gilt star with ball-tipped finials on oak wreath suspension; the face with a circular central medallion bearing Annamese characters meaning ‘It is worthy to develop knowledge’ within a stippled ring inscribed ‘INDOCHINE FRANCAISE’ (French Indochina), arabesques below; the reverse identical; diameter 47mm (1.85 inch); on an old correct ribbon lacking the rosette for a first class award.
The Order was established on 30 April 1900 by Paul Doumer, Governor-General of French Indochina from 1897 to 1902 (and later President of France 1931-1932) to be awarded in three classes to the local population of Annam, Cambodia, Cochin China, Laos and Tonkin for services to agriculture, commerce, industry and art
The third class was limited to 500 members, the second class to 100 members and the first class to 15 members.
The insignia were made by Arthus Bertrand of Paris.
The Order is rare in all classes.
