France, Third Republic. A Group of Three Decorations

1. Legion of Honour, Knight (Légion d’honneur, Chevalier), silver gilt and enamel, of five-arm white enamelled star construction with ball-tipped finials between the arms and green enamelled laurel and oak wreath between the star points, the obverse centre bearing a gilt medallion depicting the head of Marianne encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed “REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE 1870”, the reverse centre with medallion bearing crossed tricolour flags surmounted by a fasces and encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed “HONNEUR ET PATRIE”, suspended from its original red ribbed ribbon via a green enamelled wreath suspension, the enamels largely intact with minor contact marks and light wear to the gilt surfaces, in very fine condition.

2. Cross of the Liberation (Croix de la Libération), bronze, of stylized sword passing through a square plaque bearing the inscription “PATRIAM SERVANDO VICTORIAM TULIT”, the reverse displaying the Cross of Lorraine in relief, suspended from its original green ribbon with black stripes, showing fading, the bronze surface displaying a uniform age patina and light surface wear consistent with age and handling.

3. Military Medal (Médaille Militaire), silvered bronze and gilt with blue enamel details, the obverse centre bearing a medallion with the head of Marianne encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed “REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE 1870”, surrounded by a wreath of laurel leaves, surmounted by a trophy of arms suspension, the reverse centre medallion inscribed “VALEUR ET DISCIPLINE”, suspended from its original yellow ribbon with green edge stripes, the medal displaying  minor enamel wear consistent with age and handling

The Légion d’honneur was instituted in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte and remains the highest order of merit in France, awarded for outstanding civil or military achievements. The Croix de la Libération was established in 1940 by General Charles de Gaulle to recognize individuals, military units, and communities that distinguished themselves in the liberation of France during the Second World War; it is one of the rarest French decorations, with only 1,061 awards made. The Médaille Militaire, created in 1852 by Napoleon III, is one of France’s most prestigious decorations for non-commissioned officers and enlisted personnel, awarded for acts of bravery and long, meritorious military service.
