France, Kingdom. A Carved Meerschaum Pipe with Silver Mountings, by E.W, c.1825

A lovely silver mounted Meerschaum pipe, with a delicately and meticulously carved, the bowl presenting a right facing eagle with open wings amongst a trophy of arms in the background, and a shielded “N” below the eagle, the shank features clusters of three small hashmarks creating a lightly textured field, the silver mountings present a single hinged cover with relief around the edges and the cuff is also reinforced and finished with a silver ring with a smooth stem holder and locking eye. Silver hallmarks are present on the cuff, interior of the lid and on the silver base of the chamber cover, denoting the silver is of London manufacture, date mark F for c.1821, by E.W, possible identifying Edward Witham or Eden Wintle, the pipe measures 11.8 cm (h) x 6.7 cm (w) x 16 cm (l), lovely colouring to the meerschaum indicating tobacco usage, dark patina on the silver, small cracks and wear visible on the bowl and shank, missing the stem attachment, remains in very fine condition.
