France, III Republic. An Order of the Legion of Honour in Gold, Officer, by Arthus Bertrand, c.1920

 (Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur, Chevalier). Third Republic (1870-1951). Instituted in 1802. In 18K Gold, a white enamelled Maltese cross with ball finials, segments of green enamelled laurel and oak leaves in each quadrant constituting a surrounded wreath, the obverse medallion presents the left facing head of Marianne, surrounded by a blue ring inscribed REPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE, the reverse medallion presenting crossed French flags, surrounded by a blue enamelled ring inscribed HONNEUR ET PATRIE, surmounted by a large enamelled wreath and loop, measures 42.02mm (w) x 59.51 mm (h - inclusive of wreath suspension), weighs 17.38 grams, worn on original ribbon with large rosette, marked on the 6 o’clock ribbon tassel with an eagle’s head denoting French manufacture and gold fineness, minor hairline cracks in the white enamels, in extremely fine conditions.

Contained in the original case of issue, a brown leatherette exterior, silk interior lid marked ARTHUS BERTRAND PARIS, creme coloured velvet medal bed, measures 75 mm (w) x 140 mm (h) x 38 mm (d), light wear, functional hinge and catch, in extremely fine condition.
