Description
(Orden der Westfälischen Krone). Instituted 25th of December, 1809 by King Hieronymus I of Westphalen. Manufactured as a later example during the second half of the 19th Century, consisting of a finely embroidered star with alternating scaled and smooth arms, twisted silver bullion shaped to form boarders on each individual ray, with an eyelet on each ray point, obverse centre in silver and separately applied using four prongs, centre iconography of an eagle and lion adorned by a single crown, the horse of Westphalia, the lion of Cassel, all surmounted by the imperial eagle carrying lightning, on which is written JE LES UNIS, encircled by a snake consuming its own tail, a blue enamelled surround with inscription "CHARACTER UND AUFRICHTIGKEIT" (Character and Honesty), reverse with original paper backing presenting a handwritten “Jeromis Wesphalia”, with three visible prongs attached to the obverse, measures 76.60mm (w) x 87.40mm (h), weighs 20.6 grams, enamel chips evident on blue enamel ring, age related wear visible, a very rare decoration in near very fine condition.
Footnote: The Order of the Crown of Westphalia was founded on December 25, 1809, by Napoleon's brother Jerome Bonaparte, also known as King Hieronymus I of Westphalia. The Order was established in three grades and could be awarded to civilians and military personnel. It was conferred upon individuals who rendered exceptional service to the crown and state. Awardable acts included performing acts of heroism or humanity and making useful discoveries. Membership in the Order was limited to 10 Grand Crosses.
