(Orden al Mérito Naval). Instituted 1866 by Queen Isabella II. Franco’s government issue. An eight-pointed multi-rayed star in silver gilt, with obverse centre exhibiting an enameled white Latin Cross with a blue enameled anchor in bronze gilt, with alternated lions and castles in each quadrant also in bronze gilt, surmounted by an Imperial crown and a beneath clasp on the 12 o'clock arm, the reverse with buttonhole for attachment, measuring 23.02 (w) x 23.14 mm (h), with toned silver, very good.
Footnote: The Order of Naval Merit was established in Spain by Queen Isabel II/Isabella II on August 3, 1866. It was founded to recognize the Spanish Navy Force which was taking part of many overseas battles at that time. The Order also recognized the civil and commercial ships who served to the Spanish Navy. The Order was awarded to members of the Spanish Naval Forces, Civil Guard, civilians, and foreigners for meritorious and gallant actions within the sphere of naval service.
