Description
(Österreichisch-kaiserlicher Leopold-Orden, Ehrenzeichen für Offiziere), 1867-72 period issue. Multi-piece construction; the badge consisting of a Leopold Cross - a cross pattee constructed of gold, with red and white enameled arms; the obverse with a central red enameled medallion, inscribed “F.I.A.” in gold for “Franciscus Imperator Austriae”, surrounded by a ring of white enamels, inscribed “INTEGRITATI ET MERITO” (Latin - Integrity and Merit); the reverse with a central white enameled medallion, inscribed “OPES REGUM CORDA SUBDITORUM” (Latin - The deeds of the Kings win the hearts of their subjects); the cross contained within a broad gold frame, the obverse and reverse dated “January 6th, 1808”, on a loop for suspension from a Gold partially enameled swivel crown - the crown marked “FR”, with a goat head hallmark for 750 gold purity, the loop likewise marked “FR”, goat head hallmark for 18Kt. Gold, and “750”, with the broad loop also marked “FR” and “750” for gold content; accompanied by its period original neck ribbon; measuring 41.83 mm (w) x 52.92 mm (h); the crown measuring 31.88 mm (w) x 36.64 mm (h); the neck badge weighing 34.0 grams; in overall extremely fine condition and of highest rarity.
Footnote: This Imperial Orderder of Peopold for Officer’s was bestowed on 2 persons at a time by the head of the Order Chancellery of this Order. Upon the death or retirement of either recipient, the order was returned to the Order Chancellery. So, in theory, after 1918 and collapse of the Empire, one can assume that 2 of these (perhaps a couple of more) were in existence at that time. One is in a museum in Vienna, with two additional exampls known to be in private collections, making this one of the few remaining examples available on the market. It is therefore of highest rarity.
Accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity produced by eMedals INC. and signed by Dr.Georg Ludwigstorff - Author of Austrian Orders and Decorations. Part 1: The Imperial-Royal Orders up to 1918. 2 Volumes
