(Franz Joseph Orden, Großkreuz). Second Period. First Type. Issued 1914-1918. A wartime star in silver, consisting of eight multi-rayed arms; the obverse with a badge attached via two screws visible on the reverse; consisting of a double headed crowned eagle in bronze gilt, with a central white enameled medallion inscribed “FJ” in gilt lettering, along with chains and “Viribus Unitis” (Latin - United Strength) inscribed in gilt; the reverse with a vertical pinback and a functional hinge/catch assembly, marked “Vincent Mayer’s Söhne, Wien” and “G” for “Großkreuz”, as well as with a star on the pin on the reverse; measuring 91.70 mm (w) x 91.70 mm (h); weighing 83.4 grams, extremely fine. Accompanied by a full length 99 mm wide satin sash ribbon. Also accompanied by its presentation case of issue; constructed of heavy cardstock, with a black faux leather (leatherette) exterior; the exterior of the lid marked “Franz Joseph Ordens - Grosskreuz” and maker marked “Etuis und Kassetenfabrik, J.S. Bergmann, Wien, VII”; with a functional push button clasp, with a partially severed interior fabric hinge cover, but a functional external metal hinge; measuring 123 mm (w) x 204 mm (h); in overall extremely fine condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
