Hardcover, scarlet red cloth cover, with kraft paper dust jacket, entitled "The 42nd Battalion C.E.F. Royal Highlanders of Canada in the Great War" by Lieutenant-Colonel C. Beresford Topp, D.S.O., M.C., The Governor General's Foot Guards (late Major, 42nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada), published by the Gazette Printing Company Limited of Montreal, Quebec, copyrighted in Canada in 1931 by the 42nd Battalion, C.E.F., Royal Highlanders of Canada, printed and bound in Canada. It begins with an Acknowledgment by R.L.H. Ewing, late Lieutenant-Colonel, 42nd Battalion, followed by an Historical Precis, an Author's Note and a Table of Contents. As stated in the Author's Note: "This book is based upon the official War Diary of the 42nd Battalion, Royal Highlanders of Canada, kept as part of their duty by the various Officers who served as Adjutant, together with reports of operations, correspondence filed and other Orderly Room papers." It is divided into sixteen chapters: I - Organization of the Battalion; II - Training in England and France; III - Trench Warfare - First Tours in the Salient; IV - The Battle of Mount Sorrel; V - The Somme - Courcelette and Fabeck Graben (Battles of the Somme, 1916); VI - Trench Raids (Neuville St. Vaast); VII - The Capture of Vimy Ridge (First Battle of Arras, 1917); VIII - Avion (Trench Warfare); IX - Passchendaele; X - Lens and Liévin (The Battalion's Longest Tour); XI - Amiens (The Beginning of the Hundred Days); XII - The Action at Parvillers (Battles of Amiens, 1918); XIII - Arras (Actions near Monchy-le-Preux and Jigsaw Wood); XIV - Actions before Cambrai (Battle of the Canal du Nord); XV - Mons (Attack through Forêt de Raismes); XVI - Demobilization. It concludes with nine Appendices, lead by a Word from the Padre: I - Battle Honours; II - Honour Roll; III - Nominal Roll of Officers and Other Ranks; IV - Honours and Awards; V - Casualties by Periods; VI - Battles and Other Engagements; VII - Vimy Operation Order; VIII - Songs and Parodies; IX - Itinerary. The book incorporates nine pull-out line-drawn maps (Battle on Mount Sorrel; Battle of the Somme; Capture of Vimy Ridge; Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele); Battle of Amiens - August 8, 1918; Parvillers - August 12, 1918; Battle of the Scarpe (Jigsaw Wood); Battle of Cambrai; Final Advance to Mons), along with twenty-three illustrations/photographs, most of which are in black and white, the image of the Memorial Window in colour. The book contains 426 pages of text, printed in black ink on an off-white paper stock, the fold-out maps in colour on an off-white paper stock, the illustrations printed in black or colour inks on a semi-coated paper stock, measuring 155 mm (w) x 237 mm (h) x 47 mm (d).
