He attended Yorkton Collegiate (1921-1925), Yorkton Normal School, 3rd Class (October 1925 - February 1926) and Regina Normal School, 1st Class (January - June 1927). He enlisted as a Private (SL-9040) at Regina, Saskatchewan on January 3, 1940, at the age of 32, having had three years' previous service with the 1st Yorkton Regiment and three years with the 16th/22nd Saskatchewan Horse. He served as a Clerk with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps at Canadian Military Headquarters in London, England, achieving a number of ranks throughout his career: seven of which included Acting Corporal (October 1, 1940), Temporary Corporal (January 1, 1941), Acting Lance Sergeant (May 1, 1942), Lance Sergeant (August 1, 1942), Acting Sergeant (August 2, 1942), Sergeant (November 2, 1942) and Acting Staff Sergeant (June 15, 1943) before he was awarded one silver and three red service chevrons on January 3, 1944.
