Portugal, GNR. A Portuguese National Republican Guard (Guarda Nacional Republicana) Pickelhaube,

This is a very well-preserved Portuguese National Republican Guard (GNR) pickelhaube-style helmet, constructed of a reinforced black lacquered leather shell with bronze adornments. The helmet has leather attachments at the front and rear, serving as a visor and neck protector, respectively. The front of the helmet bears a large, richly-stylized emblem composed of a central raised Portuguese coat of arms within a ribbed wheel-style border, surrounded by oak leaves and acorns, in front of an arrangement of Portuguese flags. The decoration is securely held in place by three metal screws with nuts visible in the interior. The top of the helmet has a raised spike within an oak leaf-style decoration, anchored in place by a bronze band extending through to the rear visor, held in place by a metal screw with nut. The helmet is flanked on both sides by insignia composed of a ribbed five-pointed star pinned with stylized “GNR” initials, tightly held in place by metal screws. A black leather chinstrap emanates from the side decorations' screws, complete with magnetic metal buckle meeting six stamped holes, and rests upon the front visor. The interior of the helmet has nine black leather fingers, each stamped with a reinforced buttonhole at the top, securely stitched into the brim. A ventilation shaft from the exterior spikes extending through the top of the interior, held in place by a wingnut-style screw apparatus. There are two additional reinforced ventilation holes on each side of the helmet. The helmet is unmarked and measures approximately 192 mm (w) x 312 mm (l) x 205 mm (h). Age-appropriate fatigue is evident to the leather, and the interior liner and leather finger lace are missing, but the helmet is in an otherwise near extremely fine condition.
