Description
Included is a tunic with his awards and a matching pair of service breeches. The tunic is fabricated from khaki gabardine wool, the collars in ornately-patterned gold-coloured bullion wire and red wool, with bullion oak leaves and two silver bullion and sequined stars, on a machine-woven gold-coloured bullion rank strip with an alternating v-shaped pattern, indicative of the rank of Lieutenant General, with a hook and eye closure at the opening. The shoulders are adorned with shoulder straps consisting of two rows of gold-coloured threading interlaced with maroon threading, wrapped in a u-shape, the threading in a chevron formation, button hole with a 15 mm gilt brass button illustrating the Royal Hungarian crown, as are all the gilt buttons on the tunic, the underside in red wool. The front has four pockets: smaller ones on each breast and larger, deeper ones at the waist on either side, each pocket with decorative straps giving them a pleated-look and fold over flaps that are held in place by a 25 mm gilt brass button. Tied around the collar on a full-length original neck ribbon is a Hungary: Order of Merit, Commander's Cross with Swords on War Ribbon (silver gilt with red, white and green enamels, 53 mm). Protruding through the front opening is a Hungary: Order of Merit, Commander's Cross with Green Ribbon (silver gilt with red, white and green enamels, 53 mm), its lengthy green ribbon sewn in place to the inside left near the armpit. Three awards are pinned in place via horizontal loops on the left breast pocket: a Hungary: Order of Vitez Badge with Silver Sword for Descendants (three-piece construction, bronze gilt with red, blue, white and green enamels, 37.5 mm x 58 mm, dual slider, one of which is maker marked "BOCZÁN GY. BUDAPEST") upon the pleat and flanked by a Hungary: Order of Merit, Officer's Cross with War Decoration and Swords (silver gilt with red, white and green enamels, 50.8 mm, vertical pinback, crazing evident in the white enamels on the upper arm) to the left and a Hungary: Order of Merit, Officer's Cross (silver gilt with red, white and green enamels, 48 mm, vertical pinback) on the right. An additional set of three horizontal loops appears below the Order of Vitez, where a Hungary: Air Raid Protection Badge once resided but has been lost to time. Sewn in place above the left breast pocket is a group of eleven awards, which includes: Austria: Order of the Iron Crown, 3rd Class with War Decoration and Swords (bronze gilt with red, blue, white and green enamels, maker marked "ROZET & FISCHMEISTER" on the reverse of the ribboned suspension below the crown, 29.8 mm x 57 mm inclusive of its crown suspension); Hungary: Order of Merit, Knight's Cross (silver gilt with red, white and green enamels, 42.3 mm); Austria: Military Merit Medal "Signum Laudis" with Swords (bronze gilt, 30.7 mm x 51.5 mm inclusive of its crown suspension); Hungary: "Signum Laudis 1922" Medal on Military Ribbon (bronze gilt, 31.8 mm x 49.5 mm inclusive of its crown suspension); Austria: Bravery Medal, 1st Class, Type IV (1914-1916) Franz Joseph I (silver, 40.2 mm); Austria: Bravery Medal, 2nd Class, Type IV (1914-1916) Franz Joseph I (silver, 31.2 mm); Austria: Karl Troop Cross (war materials, 29.3 mm); Austria: Wound Medal with Four Stripes (war materials, 37.8 mm); Hungary: First World War Commemorative Medal (silver bronze, 37 mm); Hungary: Occupation of Transylvania Commemorative Medal (zinc, 35.8 mm); and Hungary: Long Service Decoration, Officer's 2nd Class Cross for Twenty-Five Years' Service (bronze gilt with a silvered insignia, inscribed "1942. VIII.18." on the reverse, 34.7 mm), each with original triangular ribbons. The front is adorned with five 25 mm gilt buttons at the right side at the opening, facing an equal number of reinforced button holes at the left side opening, with an additional two 15 mm brown plastic buttons to the left of the bottom gilt button near the opening. Placed upon the cuffs of each sleeve are three vertically arranged 15 mm gilt buttons. The inside is lined in a typical partial lining, in a champagne-coloured padded silken fabric, complemented by patches and trim in red silk, clearly indicating the status of the owner. Sewn upon the left side behind the left breast pocket is the maker's label, inscribed "ALAPITTATOTT 1895 Nagy Kalman BUDAPEST IV. KOSSUTH LAJOS-U.6". The sleeves are lined in white cotton with a repeating triple black rule design. The tunic measures 440 mm across the shoulders x 790 mm in length. The accompanying service breeches are also fabricated from the same khaki gabardine wool as that used in the tunic. They come with a buttoned fly, with three brown plastic buttons on the outside, along with a large dark brown plastic button inside at the waist, ensuring a snug fit. There are four dark brown plastic buttons along the waist, two at the front and one on either side. The rear of the breeches are vented, with a loop sewn over the venting and two long straps below the venting, the strap on the left side with a magnetic metal buckle, secured in place by a vertical loop, and when fed through the strap on the right side, ensures a snug fit. There are three cotton-lined pockets, a smaller one at the front on the right side and two larger ones on either side at the rear, each pocket with brown plastic buttons. Each leg is trimmed in a thin strand of red piping flanked by wide bands of red wool on either side, that extend from the waist to 150 mm above the leg opening. The cuffs are vented, each cuff with three vertically arranged brown plastic buttons on the outside panel, facing an equal number of reinforced button holes on the inside panel. The inside is lined in white cotton around the waist and behind the fly, the white cotton with a repeating triple black rule design, as per that used in the sleeves of the tunic, the inside without markings. The breeches measure 450 mm across the waist x 1,010 mm in length overall. Although there is no name tag in the tunic, the set is known to have come from his estate. Extremely fine.
Footnote: Lieutenant General vitez Istvan Kudriczy (originally Heiser) was born to the German Heiser family in Pantschowa, Austria-Hungary (today Serbia), on August 29, 1896. After high school, he decided on a military career and enrolled in the Ludovika Military Academy in Budapest, graduating as a Lieutenant. Beginning in August 1914, he first served as a Fahnrich (Warrant Officer) in the K.u.K. (Kaiserlich und Königlich) 23rd Jager Battalion, where he quickly distinguished himself in battle, receiving the small and large silver Bravery Medals. Later, as a Lieutenant, he also received the Military Merit Medal "Signum Laudis" with Swords, as well as the Order of the Iron Crown 3rd Class with War Decorations and Swords. Ultimately, he was wounded four times, recognized as a brave officer who was well liked and respected by his superiors, as well as his subordinates. A few of his accomplishments include his having taught at the Ludovika Military Academy, in addition to being the National Leader of the Levente, which was a paramilitary organization for young men before the mandatory service in the Royal Hungarian Army. He also served at the War Ministry in Central Intelligence. Beginning in 1944 and until the end of the Second World War, Kudriczy commanded the 2nd Hungarian Army Corps, ultimately retreating into Germany, where he surrendered to the British. He was handed over to the new communist sympathizing Hungarian Government, which demoted and fired him from the Army, and also tried him for war crimes on trumped up charges, sentencing him to twelve years in prison in 1946. After serving ten years, he was freed during the Hungarian Revolution of 1956. Seizing the opportunity, he emigrated to the United States with his family, where he died on October 15, 1969 in Passaic, New Jersey, at the age of 73.
