Germany, GDR. A National People’s Army (NVA) Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Grade, with Case
(Verdienstmedaille der Nationalen Volksarmee in Silber mit Etui). Instituted 1 June 1956. (1956-1990 issue). Constructed of silver, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon with pentagonal bronze backplate and horizontal pinback, the obverse with raised figures representing the Army, Navy, and Air Force, circumscribed by an inscription of “FÜR HERVORRAGENDE VERDIENST - NATIONALE VOLKSARMEE” (“FOR OUTSTANDING SERVICE - NATIONAL PEOPLE’S ARMY”), the reverse with a coat of arms of the German Democratic Republic, circumscribed by an inscription of “FÜR DEN SCHUTZ DER ARBEITER UND BAUERN MACHT” (“FOR THE PROTECTION OF THE WORKERS AND FARMERS”), within a laurel wreath, unmarked, measuring 34.61 mm in diameter, weighing 26.6 grams (inclusive of ribbon and backplate), accompanied by a ribboned bar, constructed of a period original length of ribbon affixed to a bronze bar with a horizontal pinback, unmarked, measuring 25 mm in length, also accompanied by its presentation case, constructed of black and transparent plastic, with a foam medal bed, unmarked, 63 mm (w) x 124 mm (h), in near extremely fine condition.
