An Outstanding Order of the Iron Crown Collar Awarded to General Alfred Edler von Schnek - Of unequaled quality by Austrian maker FR.Rothe, thoroughly marked as well as silver hallmarked on rings as well as tab. Consisting of 12 uniform sets of oak leaf wreaths - cypher - and crown, all in finely detailed silver gilt and the majority of links individually hallmarked. Each crown obverse exhibits intricate enameling in green, red, and white with very minimal chipping from period use. The centre and focale point of the piece displays an oak leaf cluster with stunning detail. Overall length stands at 53 inches. Importantly, two numbers are engraved; 34350 (Those Orders Awarded) & No 252 (Recipient - Alfred Edler von Schnek) Better than extremely fine as a whole. Footnote: Born in Ljublanja (Laibach), Slovenia on July 5th 1863, Alfred Edler von Schneck was the son of a retired serior civil servant. He studied at both the Gymnasium and Cadet School in Prague before enteting the 21st Infantry Regiment Freiherr von Mondel in July 1880 at age 18. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in Infantry Regiment Nr.91 Ritter von Fröhlich on May 1st 1884 before being promoted to Oberleutnant on November 1st 1888. Schnek then attended the General Staff Course at the War School and following that he was attached to the General Staff of the 9th Infantry Brigade at Olmütz on November 1st 1889 until November 24th 1891. As a promising Staff Officer, Schnek was promoted early to Captain 1st Class in the General Staff Corps on May 5th 1892 with further promotion to the 2nd Mountain Brigade at Trebinje and in November 1892 until April 1895 he continued his military career to the staff of the 12th Army Corps at Hermannstadt. Schnek studied Russian at Kazan from May 1895 to May 1896, followed by an assignment to the Intelligence Bureau of the General Staff. After being promoted to Major on November 1st 1898, he was assigned as Chief of Staff of the 16th Infantry Division. He continued on to be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on May 1sy 1902 and served with the 1st Bosnian Herzegovinan Infantry Regiment. Schnek gained command on April 13th 1907, after being promoted to Colonel on November 27th 1905. He became Austrian nobility in February 1911 and assumed the title of Elder von Schnek shortly after his promotion to General Major on May 11th 1911. In February 1914, Schnek was commanding the 97th Infanrty Brigade in Vienna in the coming war against Russia as a rear army commander but was appointed to command 15.ID in August 1914. This was followed by another promotion to Feldmarschalleutnant on November 1st 1914. Schnek was given command of the 9th Infantry Division and served further in Italy, particularly on the Isonzo Front as the Sector Commander of “Adschnitt”, or Sector IIIb, which included his own Division as well as the 24th Landsturm Mountain Brigade, 59th Infantry Brigade and 43rd Artillery Brigade. The “Abscnhitt” sector covered the Southern end of Carso to the east of Monfalcone and was renamed as Group Schnek until November 1st 1916 when it became known as the XXIII Army Corps. On June 23rd 1917, Schnek gained command of the XIII Army Corps in Generaloberst Terszyánszky's 3rd Army on the Stanislau Sector of the Russian Front. He was eventually promoted to General der Infanterie on February 1st 1918 with seniority from the 28th of that month. He assumed command of the IX Army Corps on February 21st 1918. When the Monarchy collapsed, General von Scnek was the Military Governor of Zagreb before he retired on January 1st 1919 after serving Austria for 44 years. He received many decorations over his years in the military, including a Knight First Class of the Order of the Iron Crown (with War Decoration and Swords), holder of the Military Merit Cross Second Class (with War Decoration and Swords), and a Knight of the Order of Leopold (with War Decoration and Swords). Alfred Elder von Schnek died on October 12th 1952 in Vienna, Italy. (AO1059)
