A 14K Gold double Maltese cross enamelled in red, with badges of six of the corps assigned to the army, the centre obverse presents a seal with a crescent moon, a star, and the cipher AP, the reverse is engraved with the number 721, measuring 33.12 mm (w) x 33.12 mm (h), with a top piece of crossed cavalry sabres, attached to a blue and white ribbon, a pair of crossed cannons below the ribbon, and in near very fine condition.
Footnote: The Society of the Army of the Potomac held its first reunion on July 5, 1869 in New York. It was created as a fraternal organization with the aim of commemorating Civil War veterans and preserving a record of their actions during the war. Membership in the Society was open to those who had served in the Army of the Potomac. Each of the medal's six rays features the symbol of a different corps from the Army of the Potomac. Many of these medals were made by Bailey, Banks and Biddle jewelers in Philadelphia. A scarce medal.
