Somalia, Republic. An Order Of The Star, Commander, C.1965

Instituted on February 12, 1961. A six pointed star with ball finials in silver gilt, arms composing of panels of alternating blue enamels, obverse centre featuring a circular enameled white medallion, superposed by a silver gilt Somali iconography of the star and crescent moon, reverse displaying a white-enameled medallion with gilded motto, suspended by large silver gilt star and crescent moon, marked by Italian hallmark denoting .830 silver fineness, together with indecipherable maker’s mark, measuring 55.56 mm (w) x 97.92 mm (h - inclusive of suspension), with loss of blue enamels on the 5 o’clock arm reverse, accompanied by original blue neck ribbon, extremely fine.

Footnote: The Order was instituted on February 12, 1961 along with Somali awards following their independence in 1960. Due to the civil war, the Order was suspended.
