Description
(Sturmabteilung Dienstrock mit Hose). A Sturmabteilung (SA) service uniform for ranks Mann-Haupttruppführer, consisting of:
1. A Dienstrock (service tunic), constructed of olive-drab wool cloth. It features a turned-down collar which is reinforced on the reverse with machine-stitched darts. The right side collar retains a tab which is constructed of emerald-green wool (indicating issue to SA-Gruppe Nordmark or SA-Gruppe Sachsen), trimmed with silver-grey piping, bears a unit attribution of “1/5“ (Sturm 1, Standarte 5), and measuring 40 mm (w) x 60 mm (l). The shoulders are topped by boards which are constructed of a grey wool twill base with a rigid card stock core, and topped lengths of golden-brown rayon piping interspersed with silver aluminum wire chevrons. Each measuring 25 mm (w) x 100 mm (l), the boards are secured in place with stitching at the seam of the sleeve, and with metal buttons on the inner edge. The cuff of each sleeve is rolled up to a depth of 14 cm and if fixed in place with stitching. Stitched onto the upper left arm is an NSDAP member’s armband, constructed of a red wool base and overlaid by a white rayon disc bearing a black mobile swastika, measuring 10 cm in width. Four pockets are set into the breasts, all closing with reinforced horizontal flaps perforated with reinforced buttonholes which in turn meet metal buttons, with the top pockets pleated. Pinned onto the upper right chest is an SA/NSDAP cap eagle, constructed of aluminum, marked on the back with a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M1/34” for Karl Wurster, Markneukirchen, and measuring 65 mm (w) x 30 mm (h). Four magnetic metal belt hooks protrude from the back and sides of the waistband, with the innermost presenting as buttons. The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece golden-brown rayon liner which transitions into silver-grey through the arms. A single pocket is set into the upper left chest, while a narrow bandage compartment set into the lower corner of the same breast retains an original and unused wrap. The interior of the breast pocket retains an RZM label, correctly issued for the SA-Dienstrock, which is stamped with a partially-legible maker code. The tunic measures approximately 42 cm across the shoulders, with an arm length of 56, and an overall length of 70 cm when folded on a flat surface. Some issues consistent with age, wear, and modification are evident, and include minor material fatigue throughout the base cloth, the loss of the left side collar tab, and the unexplained addition of a cap eagle onto the breast (which has lost one of its three attachment prongs). The tunic remains in a very fine condition.
2. A pair of breeches, constructed of an identical olive-drab wool cloth. Five brown bakelite buttons are distributed around the waistband, while an integral belt situated just below the waistband consists of two straps which fasten closed with functional metal buckles. A French fly closes with five brown bakelite buttons. Two side pockets close with diagonal scalloped flaps perforated with reinforced buttonholes and brown bakelite buttons, while a single back pocket is set into the upper right leg and has an identical button closure. A vertical slash set into each ankle has a grey rayon drawstring closure. The interior features a partial off-white rayon liner around the waistband, while the reverse of one pocket reveals an intact RZM label, bearing a partially-legible maker code, correctly issued for SA-Stiefelhose (breeches). Measuring approximately 42 cm across the waistband, with an inseam of 66 cm when folded on a flat surface, the breeches demonstrate the loss of several buttons (including suspender and fly buttons), with minor material fatigue throughout. They remain in a better than very fine condition.
