Description
Description
(Kriegsmarine feldgraue Schirmmütze für einen Offizier der Küstenartillerie). A well-preserved Kriegsmarine Coastal Artillery Officer’s visor cap, constructed of field-grey wool. The cap is fully surrounded by reinforced side walls which are lined on the exterior with a dark green wool cap band. Both the top and bottom edges are trimmed with lengths of identical dark green wool piping, while an additional length of identical piping surrounds the outer edge of the crown. Pinned onto the peak is a service-mismatched gilded aluminum insignia consisting of a government-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 65 mm (w) x 35 mm (h). Directly below the eagle, the centre of the cap band features an additional insignia in the form of a padded dark green wool backer bearing a central aluminum tri-colour cockade, situated within a gold bullion wire oak leaf wreath, measuring 65 mm (w) x 60 mm (h). The lower edge of the cap band is flanked on each side by gilded magnetic metal buttons bearing raised fouled anchors, securing in place a celleon wire chinstrap, original finished in golden-yellow, which has faded to silver over time, with only trace amounts of its original colour remaining. A protruding vulcanfibre visor completes the exterior features, and is finished in black with a classic reinforced room often encountered on Coastal Artillery caps. The interior is fully encompassed by a multi-piece blue rayon liner, with the crown bearing a gilt maker’s mark of “JSJ” for a manufacture commonly associated with naval and water police headgear. A size mark of “56” remains visible beneath the maker’s logo. A wide brown leather sweatband surrounds the side walls. The cap measures approximately 24 cm (w) x 27 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). In addition to replacement of the peak eagle and fading of the chinstrap, the crown’s interior moisture guard has been lost, and minor bending is visible to the side walls. This scarce example remains in a better than very fine condition.
