A collection of six Austrian medals, including a Military Merit Medal (Militärverdienstmedaille Signum Laudis), constructed of silver, the obverse presents the right-facing bust of Emperor Karl, circumscribed by the inscription CAROLVS D.G.IMP.AVST.REX.BOH.ETC.ET.REX.APOST.HVNG, maker mark KAUTSCH beneath the bust, the reverse centre presents the motto SIGNVM LAVDIS (SIGN OF PRAISE), surrounded by a wreath of half laurels and half oak leaves, surmounted by the paired crowns of Austria and Hungary on a bed of laurel and oak leaves, measuring 30.46 mm (w) x 45.35 mm (h - inclusive of crown), on period replacement tri-fold ribbon, and in very fine condition. A Commemorative Medal 1898 (Erinnerungsmedaille 1898 Signum memorie), Civil Type, constructed of gilded bronze, the obverse presents a right-facing bust of Franz Joseph, circumscribed in latin script, the reverse presents SIGNVM MEMORIAE (IN MEMORY), measuring 34.18 mm in diameter, on loop for suspension from period original civil division ribbon, and in near very fine condition. A Commemorative Cross 1848-1908, Military Division, a gilded bronze cross pattée, with a wreath of laurel leaves between the arms of the cross, the obverse centre displays a right-facing bust of Franz Joseph, inscribed FRANC IOS, reverse presents the dates 1848 1908, measuring 35.79 mm (w) x 40.87 mm (h), on loop for suspension from period original military personnel tri-fold ribbon, and in good condition. A Commemorative Cross 1848-1908, Civil Division, a gilded bronze cross pattée, with a wreath of laurel leaves between the arms of the cross, the obverse centre displays a right-facing bust of Franz Joseph, inscribed FRANC IOS, reverse presents the dates 1848 1908, measuring 36.12mm (w) x 40.85 mm (h), on loop for suspension from period original civil tri-fold ribbon, and in good condition. A War Commemorative Medal 1914-1918 (Erinnerungsmedaille für Weltkriegsteilnehmer), a round bronze medal, the obverse depicts an Austrian eagle supported by an Austrian coat of arms, circumscribed by FÜR ÖSTERREICH (FOR AUSTRIA), the reverse presents the dates 1914-1918 within an oak wreath, measuring 36.09 mm in diameter, suspended from its period original tri-fold ribbon with two central wide red stripes and thin red stripes at the edges, with gilt swords attached to the ribbon, and in near very fine condition. A Karl Troop Cross (Karl-Truppenkreuz) constructed of a zink cross pattée resting on a laurel wreath, the obverse bears the Latin inscription GRATI PRINCEPS ET PATRIA CAROLVS IMP.ET REX (A GRATEFUL PRINCE AND COUNTRY, KARL EMPEROR AND KING), the reverse presents the Austrian and Hungarian Imperial crowns above the letter C, with the inscription VITAM ET SANGVINEM (WITH LIFE AND BLOOD), and the date MDCCCCXVI (1916), measuring 29.33 mm (w) x 33.57 mm (h), and in good condition.
This offering is a part of the "Dr. Albert Goodwin Collection", a preeminent assemblage of world Orders, Medals, and Decorations composed solely by Dr.Goodwin between 1946-1967. Dr. Goodwin had a successful career as an educator and prominent physician in New York as well as actively serving in both World Wars with the United States Medical Corps. He acted as both President and Vice-President of the Orders and Medals Society of America (OMSA) and is responsible for organizing their first convention in 1960. He maintained further membership with the American Society of Military Collectors, the International Orders Research Society, and the American Numismatic Society. His knowledge and passion for history and awards is evident in this meticulously compiled collection that is now available in its entirety for the first time exclusively on eMedals.com.
