Canada, CEF. A First War Pair to Pte. P.J. Greenway, C.M.R

A British War Medal, in silver, full size, rim officially impressed 114389 PTE. P.J.GREENWAY. 1-C.M.R., light wear, extremely fine condition. 

A Victory Medal, in bronze gilt, full size, rim officially impressed 114389 PTE. P.J.GREENWAY. 1-C.M.R., minor contact marks, in better than extremely fine condition. 

A Memorial Plaque, in bronze, measures 120.5 mm in diameter, named to PERCY JAMES GREENWAY, minor contact, remains very fine. 

A 9th Infantry Battalion Cap Badge, in pickled copper, two lugs on the reverse, measures 42.7 mm (w) x 44.2 mm (h), two lugs on the reverse, minor wear, extremely fine. 

A CEF Death Certificate, named to 114389 Private Percy James Greenway, who was presumed killed in action on or since the 1st day of October, 1916, the document is dated July 18, 1919, measures 302 mm (w) x 245 mm (h), reverse plain, light foxing and staining around edges, remains very fine. 

A black and white photo postcard on Greenway, measures 89 mm (w) x 140 mm (h), unmarked reverse, damage to image and , remains near very fine. 

Footnote: Percy James Greenway was born in Oxford, England in March 1893. He was employed as a stableman when he enlisted at Sewell, Manitoba in July 1915. 

He arrived in England in December 1915, and was later taken on strength in France in January 1916. In March of 1916, he was admitted to the West Cliff Eye and Ear Hospital for a chase of catarrhal otitis media which was caused by septic tonsils and obstructed nasal breathing. He was discharged after surgery and was again taken on strength in May.

In October 1916, Greenway was reported missing. By June, 1917, he was officially reported to have died on or since October 1, 1916. 

In October 1916, the Canadian Mounted Rifle battalions—now serving as infantry in the 8th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division—were fighting in the Battle of the Somme, chiefly in the gruelling operations to seize Regina Trench near Courcelette. They endured heavy casualties in repeated attacks through mud and shellfire before the trench finally fell to the Canadians in early November 1916.
